Valentines Day is a special day in which every flower shops anticipate. This is also the special day in which the Dangwa Flower Market in Manila Philippines gets in hyper drive. Dangwa Flower Market, or also known as the Bulaklakan ng Maynila (Flower Market of Manila), is a flower market found in the center of Manila that became very popular because of its number of flower shops congregated together to offer manilenyos a wide variety of Philippine flowers.
In 2004 it was home to 50 flower vendors. About 70 flower vendors are members of Dangwa Flower Market Association. The market derives its name from the Dangwa Transport Inc. bus station beside it. During the 80's and the 90's, the market has surpassed the fame of competitors in Quiapo, Manila and Baclaran.
Dangwa became very popular across Metro Manila because this is the only place in which manilenyos can choose from a wide variety of v coming from every part of the country such as Baguio City, Davao City, Tagaytay City, Cotabato City and Laguna. Some of the flowers sold in the market includes mums, roses, gerberas and asters.
But other than flowers local from the Philippines, Dangwa can also offer a wide variety of foreign flowers coming from other countries like Thailand, Holland and Ecuador.
Dangwa Flower Market gets very busy when peak season arrives like the Valentine's Day, All Saints Day, Mother's Day, and December. Sometimes customers flock the market until 11 pm on Valentine's Day.
Other than the Philippine flowers they offer, Dangwa Flower Market is also a historical place. It is said that the market's golden years is during the time when Imelda Marcos was the First Lady. At that time the market provided flowers for big flower shops which in turn decorated the Malacanang Palace.
The advent of modern technology, specifically Short message service or "texting" has improved communication and efficiency in transporting the flowers from rural farmers. SMS is also used to prevent losses since the flower dealers can tip the farmers to what flowers would be in demand.
So whenever a manilenyo needs to buy a flower, the Dangwa Flower Market is the only place that they can get the widest and the cheapest flowers around the whole Metro Manila.
